Mrs E. Blenkinsop

Hi, I am Mrs Blenkinsop. Over the summer break I got married.
Welcome to Year 3, where we love to create amazing memories and learn lots of new things. Outside of school, I will often be found on my big, comfy sofa reading a book, walking my dog Duke, or at the gym. Moving into KS2 can be quite nerve-racking, so I am here to make that big jump with you. Let’s smash it!

In Maths, we’ve been learning lots of new vocabulary around shape and angles. We’ve learnt 3 different angles: acute angle, right angle and obtuse angle. We’ve also been learning names of 2D shapes up to 10 sides and some 3D shapes and their properties (faces, edges and vertices). In French, we learned how to ask for different ice cream flavours with a preference of it in a cone or a tub and performed ‘The Dragon Song’ as a class for our Music Key Piece.

Our Flashback questions on Blooket this week were a recap of all the learning we have done across the year. We also had some fun doing a quiz identifying different animals.

Next week, we are looking forward to Transition week in year 4 with Miss Whiting.

This week, in History we learned about Greek Gods, Goddesses and myths. We learned about Zeus (King of the Gods), Hades (God of the underworld), Poseidon (God of the sea), Hera (Queen of the Gods), Hermes (Messenger of the Gods) and Herkules (Demi-God). We also learned that some words we use today come from Greek myths, such as the word ‘echo’ which came from a story about a nymph called echo, who was cursed by Hera for talking too much, so she could only repeat what was being spoken to her. We also learned that the Greeks explained seasons because of Demeter (Goddess of Harvest) grieving the loss of her daughter (Persephone) who had to spend 6 months of the year in the underworld with Hades. During this times Demeter would be sad and therefore all the crops wouldn’t grow. In Music, we’ve been learning how to play ‘The Dragon Song’ on the glockenspiel. In DT, we finalised our bridge design and built it using different strengthening features for our key pieces. In Science, this week, we investigated how well magnets attract paper clips from different distances and in RE we learned about the 4th and 5thpillars of Islam: Sawm (fasting) and Hajj (pilgrimage).

Our Flashback questions on Blooket this week were:

1.Who are the King of Queen of the Gods in Greek mythology?

2.What is a bascule bridge?

3.Tourism can encourage people to spend money in the places they visit. What does this effect an area? Environmentally, socially, economically.

Next week, we are looking forward to the Rocksteady concert and Sports Day.

Our spelling rule next week is “s‘’ sounding words: absolute, consistent, necessary, evidence, concept, society, scent, thistle, influence, nonsense, cease, circumstances

This week, in DT we learned a new way to strengthen a bridge. We used card to add an arch underneath the deck and we also made piers (pillars) to add support from underneath. In Dance this week, we ran through all the dances again for our Annie performance, but this time Emily (our dance teacher) stood at the back to see if we could do it on our own. In History, we looked at Greek architecture, which used pillars of different styles: Ionic, Corinthian, Doric. The Ionic pillars had swirly capital (the top of the pillar) and it was long and thin. Whereas the Corinthian pillar had an intricate capital and the Doric had no base and a short, thick pillar. In Computing, we used Scratch to create a maze for our Sprite to move through and used different blocks to create an algorithm. Finally, in Writing we have been learning about poetic devices. We used rhyme to create a poem about the emotion fear.

Our Flashback questions on Blooket this week were:

1.Ancient Greeks built using columns. What were these buildings sometimes used for?

2.What is an algorithm?

3.Which is an example of a non-contact force? Friction, or magnetism.

Next week, we will be learning about Greek mythology, Gods and Goddesses and we will be investigating magnetism from a distance.

Our spelling rule next week is“ee‘’ sounding words: steel, steal, millipede, theme, deceive, antibiotic, antisocial, anticlockwise, familiar, obvious, regal, theory

This week, we had the chance to practice some rugby skills with Holderness Vikings. We learned the different types of kicks, practiced passing a rugby ball and worked in teams to score a try. In RE, we learned that there are 5 pillars in Islam. One of the pillars we learned is called Shahada, which meant that Allah is there only God. We also learned of two types of Muslims: Sunni and Shia. The Sunni Muslims decided that when Prophet Muhamad died, their successor should be someone who is educated and worthy for the job. Whereas the Shia Muslims believed their successor should be someone from the Prophet's family. In Dance, we went through the whole performance with the Year 4s and practiced the dances and songs. In History, we learned more about who was in charge in Ancient Greece. They used democracy to vote for the people in power, who rules over each city-state. The people who couldn’t vote were people under the age of 20, women, or if you were not a citizen.

Our Flashback questions on Blooket this week were:

1.How many pillars are there in Islam?

2.In Ancient Greece, did they follow an autocracy or a democracy?

3.Where do babies start life?

Next week, we will be investigating magnetic materials, learning news ways to strengthen our bridge structures and asking, ‘What is debugging?’ on a computer programme.

Our spelling rule next week is “sh‘’ sounding words: publish, tension, tissue, exclamation, intention, tradition, non-fiction, population, transition, special, crucial

This week, we started learning about Ancient Greece. We learned that Ancient Greece was organised into city-states: Olympia, Athens, Sparta. This is different to Ancient Egypt because they had one ruler: a pharaoh, whereas Greece had different Governments. In Maths, we’ve learned how to read Roman Numerals on a clock and read time up to 5-minute intervals. We had our Geography fieldtrip this week. We walked around the village and tallied different things we saw such as green spaces and places where we can spend money, helping the economy. We also took tallies of the traffic travelling through the village. In Science, we were learning about the poles of magnets and how they attract and repel one another. They can only attract if the north and south side are facing each other. If south and south, or north and north are facing each other, they repel. In DT this half term, we are asking, ‘What makes a bridge strong?’ We learned different parts of bridges including deck, pier, gap, suspension, arch and bascule. We experimented with blocks, weights and lollipops sticks to see how long of a bridge we could make.

Our Flashback questions on Blooket this week were:

1. When magnets attract, they what? Move together, or move further away

2. Ancient Greece was an empire. True or false?

3. Uneglacé a la fraise is what flavour of ice cream? Banana, strawberry, vanilla, or pistachio

Next week, we will be asking, “Who was in charge in Ancient Greece?” and “What are the five pillars of Islam?”

Our spelling rule next week is “s‘’ sounding words: scripture, consider, intensify, democracy, sequence, exceed, discipline, fascinate, experience, purpose, police

This week, in Computing we used Microsoft Word to create a poster. We learned how to highlight text, copy and paste. We changed the background colour and added a boarder. We also finished our key pieces this week for: Jigsaw, Reading, Science and Art. In Science, we investigated which material created the most friction out of: astroturf, wood, cotton fabric and carpet. Most of us predicted the astroturf or the carpet would have the most friction because they were the bumpiest. The astroturf ended up having the most friction. In Geography, we learned about the impact of tourism. We learned that tourism could affect the environment, the economy and people socially. We also looked at the results from the parents’ survey and agreed with the findings. This will help us draw conclusions from our fieldtrip.

Our Flashback 4 questions on Blooket this week were:

1.What does ‘modesty’ mean?

2.How many countries are there in Europe?

3.What is the first stage of the life cycle of a plant? Germination, reproduction, seed dispersal, or growth?

4.The Egyptians believed in the afterlife. What was this place called?

After half term, we will be going on our Geography fieldtrip around Keyingham to observe social, environmental, or economic impact of tourism in the village. We will also be starting a new History topic and asking the question, ‘Who were the Ancient Greeks?’

Our spelling rule after half term is “l‘’ sounding words: alter, altar, probably, Bible, collapse, collision, conclusion, parallel, excellent, develop, cereal, serial

In Art, we have completed our portrait key piece using the tinting and toning techniques to create skin colour. In Maths, we have been learning about money and how to add and subtract amounts. Also, in RE we have been learning about different head coverings for the Islamic women for example the Hijab. We also learned about balanced and unbalanced forces. When forces are balanced, an object won’t move, when the forces are unbalanced, the forces will change direction, speed, or shape. We tested this on the field playing ‘Tug of War’.

Our Flashback 4 questions on Blooket this week were:

1.Friction makes objects what? Speed up, slow down, change shape, change direction?

2.What are tertiary colours?

3.A unit fraction has what number on the numerator?

4.What is our county called?

Next week, we will be carrying out a friction investigation, asking “Which material create the most friction?” We will also be planning our Geography fieldtrip thinking about the impact of tourism on our community.

Our spelling rule next week is “k‘’ sounding words: physical, category, abstract, detect, chronological, chronic, scheme, impact, location, question, technology, communicate

This week, we celebrated VE day with some Lindy Hop dancing on the playground. Our favourite dance moves were the chicken and the itch. We learned about what it would have been like to live during World War 2 with rationing going on. Some people would have to grow their own vegetables if they could and even eat offal because they didn’t have access to a lot of meat. We thought it would be difficult to have a balanced diet during this time because there wasn’t a lot of food options. In Art, we learned how to mix paint to match different skin tones, which we will use for our portraitures. To do this, we mixed a bit of all the primary colours and then tinted and toned them with white and black paint to lighten and darken the skin colours. In French this week, we learned how to say ‘more than one’ fruit. We had to change the first part to ‘les’ (pronounced lay) instead of ‘une’ or ‘un’ which means one. So, une pomme (an apple) would become les pomme (apples)

We used Blooket again to answer our Flashback 4 questions. The new questions added this week were:

1.Forces to an object can change 3 things. Which one does a force NOT change? Direction, speed, size, or shape?

2.What is a headdress that some Muslim women choose to wear called?

3.Which is a human feature? Mountain, road, river, or forest?

4.What is a physical feature? Mountain, road, river, or forest?

Next week, we will be asking “What is it like to wear a hijab in the UK today?” and “What are the human & physical features of Keyingham?”

Our spelling rule next week is “er‘’ sounding words: confirm, herbivore, permanent, persistent, transfer, research, calendar, referred, father, farther

In Art, we were learning how to do portraits of our faces, using the techniques we learned last week. In French, we continued to learn new names of fruits orange – orange, kiwi – Le kiwi, plum - prune & pear – poire. We've also been enjoying the sunshine this week, reading outside in the willow domes and the outdoor classroom.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were a recap of previous questions over the Autumn and Spring term. We turned these into a big Blooket quiz. Some of these questions were:

Which layer of Earth is made of semi-molten rock? What are fossils? What is a theist? What is a contour line in art?

Next week, we will be asking “What are balanced and unbalanced forces?” and “What is rationing and why did it happen?”

We all took part and did our best! We started deciding what roles we each would have. The Year 3’s are going to be the orphans. In Geography, we were learning about countries in Europe and their capital cities. For example: England – London, Austria – Vienna, Romania – Bucharest and France – Paris. In French, we learned 5 new names of fruits. For example: une banana – banana, une pêche – peach and une pomme – apple. In Art, we have been learning proportions for self-portraits. We drew contour lines for a nose, eyes, mouth and head. Next week, we’ll look at putting these features accurately onto a face.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1) Can you define these art vocabulary words: proportions, foreground and background?

2) Can you translate these fruits from French to English: une pomme, une pêche, une fraise, une banana, une cerise?

We were put into two teams: batters and fielders. The batters each took two turns hitting the ball, if they were successful, we had to run around the fielders and try and get all the way round. We did have some successful full laps. In Forest School, we went outside on the field and picked some flowers. We used them to create a picture. We had to poke holes into a piece of paper, which is where we would thread our flowers. We finished our design by drawing our own flowers. During our Jigsaw key piece, we were asking: ‘What choices can affect our health?’ We discussed the negative and positive effects of drugs, making sure we only take medicine from a doctor, or trusted adult. Sleep is also important to our health as well as staying hydrated. In Music, we recorded our composition for our key piece. We talked about how music can positively affect the world around us.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

In PE, we built a sequence of rolls, jumps and balances in groups and performed these to our classmates. In Maths, we did a ‘flashback’ lesson on time that we did in Year 2. We recapped how to tell time up to 5-minute intervals. We learned how we must start counting from the 12 on a clock and count in intervals of 5. Depending which side our minute hand is, tells us if it is past the hour or to the hour. In Forest School, we went outside in groups of twos, or threes with a drum. We placed a hula-hoop on the ground, banged on the drum in the middle to make the worms under soil think they are raindrops and encourage them to come to the surface. We gathered data on how many worms we found and the different types. We learned the difference between a male and female worm is female worms will have a ring around their body, whereas the males don’t. In Writing, we’ve been learning grammar skills to write a first-person narrative based on the events of Pompeii. We’ve been writing sentences, with adjectives and adverbs, that tell use when, where, or how something happens.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1)Where are tectonic plates?

2)Which part of the flower transports water and nutrients from the roots?

3)Which object is translucent?

4)During the Pentecost, Jesus was visited by which part of the Trinity?

5)Which countries are part of the British Isles?

Next week, we completing some of our key pieces from our learning this half term and learning how to say what we can and can’t do in French.

Our spelling rule next week is “sh‘’ sounding words: establish, machine, extension, pressure, possession, mention, action, tradition, option, nation, electrician, politician

Our PE days are Tuesday (indoor) and Friday (indoor)

This week, in DT we made homemade chips. We had to chop up the potatoes, trying to keep them to same size for even cooking. Then we added some olive oil and salt with the potatoes in a bowl and mixed before putting them in the ovens. In Geography, we asked, “What is it like to live near a volcano?” We learned that there are positives living near a volcano such as: volcanoes have positive effects on growing crops, providing electricity and can also bring in lots of money from tourism, which then means more jobs for the local communities. In Science, we learned about ways plants reproduce using different methods of seed dispersal. Some of the ways include: the wind, seeds getting stuck in animal fur, which the animals with then shake off elsewhere, explosive pods and sometimes when animals eat the seeds and poo them out. The investigation we started last week, using white roses to test the xylem of a plant worked successfully. The white roses begun turning red and blue as the xylem transported the coloured water up the stem to the flower. Yesterday we another workshop from the NHS Foundation trust all about emotions. We played a game where an emotion appeared on the board and the person at the front had to guess the emotion by everyone else's faces.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1)What is the job of the xylem and phloem in a plant?

2)What is a branching database?

3)Can you name 4 bones in the human skeleton?

4)Can you name a similarity and difference between Ancient Egyptians and Prehistoric Britons?

Next week, we completing some of our key pieces from our learning this half term and practising our glockenspiel composition in music.

This week, in DT we made popcorn. To make this, we used sunflower oil because it doesn’t have a strong taste. We grated lemons and limes to use the zest to make a seasoning to add to the popcorn. When we added the kernels to the oil, we could hear the corn popping. We also tried the popcorn with sugar and salt. In Science, a couple of weeks ago, we started an investigation into how light effects growth. We’ve noticed that they had grown in all the transparent, translucent and opaque test tubes. Surprisingly, the opaque test tubes show the best growth. We think this is because they have more space to grow as the test tube is slightly bigger. We also started an investigation to test the xylem of a plant. This is the part of the plant that transports water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant. First, we tried it with celery, but we didn’t notice anything happening. So now, we’ve tried white roses. Over the next few days, we shall see if they change colour. In Maths, we’ve started to recap multiplying. In Geography, we have been learning about types of volcanoes around the world. We learned some volcanoes are extinct, active and dormant. We used atlases to see where the locations of some volcanoes were. We learned that Ben Nevis in Scotland is an extinct volcano.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1.What is cross-hatching?

2.What does the religious symbol of Islam look like?

3.Which part of the skeleton protects the heart and lungs?

4.What activity is ‘patiner’ in French?

5.Bonus question: Explain how fossils are formed?

Next week, we will be asking, “What is seed dispersal?” and will be making chips in DT.

This week, in Geography we asked, ‘How are volcanoes formed?’ We learned about two types of volcano formations: constructive and destructive. Destructive volcanoes form when tectonic plates move towards each other forcing molten rock from below the crust upwards to create an eruption. Whereas constructive volcanoes form when tectonic plates move away from each other and create a chamber for molten rock to fill. We made fruity yogurt in DT. To do this, we had a chop apples, mixed frozen berries with sugar and stew these to make a thick, jam-like sauce. Once cooled, we added this to Greek yogurt and topped with toasted oats and some of us tried it with fresh mint. Also, this week, we were visited by a well-known children’s author: Joseph Coelho. He chatted to us about what inspired him to become a writer, his love for poetry and we learned some types of poetry such as one words poems and limericks. In Science, we investigate how plants transport nutrients from the soil through roots to the xylem. We tested this by adding food colouring to water and adding storks of celery. Over the next week, we will observe what will happen. We predict the celery should begin to change colour as the xylem transports the food-coloured water up the plant.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1.Which does a plant not need to make its own food? Carbon dioxide, water, light or space to grow.

2.Muslims visit this building and pray because they believe it is special. What is it called?

3.Stewing is a cooking technique. What does it mean?

4.Which is the smallest settlement? City, town, village or hamlet.

Next week, we will be asking, “What is a plants life cycle?” and will be making popcorn in DT.

We started an investigation to test how light effects the growth of watercress. We planted the seeds in test tubes with cotton wool with opaque, transparent or translucent material. Over the following week, we will observe which group grows the best. We have predicted it will be the transparent test tubes because they allow the most light needed for the plant’s nutrients. In Geography, we revisited learning about how our Earth is formed from our rocks unit in Autumn term. We remembered that there are four parts of the Earth: crust, mantle, inner core and outer core. New learning we discovered was that volcanoes erupt because of tectonic plates moving beneath us. In PE, with Mrs Overton, we played the game ‘Simon Says’ and started our gymnastic unit. In Computing, we asked, “What is a database?” We made our own branching database using whiteboard pens on our tables, yes or no questions and dinosaur pictures. We had to categorise the pictures based on the questions.

Our Flashback 4 questions this week were:

1.Which layer of the Earth is made from semi-molten rock?

2.Some rocks are permeable. What does this mean?

3.What is interfacing in textiles?

4.What are fossils?

We had a chance to explore the different pavilions: air, water and fire. The water pavilion had pools of water and water shooters. We also could weigh how much water was in our bodies and we learned about waterpower, using a piece of equipment which you had to turn to generate the power and get the water toys to move. There was a true or false game, which involved filling up containers with water when you got the right answer. The air pavilion was inside a big blimp that was high up near the ceiling. We learned how the blimps were used. In the fire pavilion, we saw a fire tornado and we played video games to help put out fires in a forest. We took part in a volcano and rock workshop. We made volcanos using baking soda and vinegar. We mixed the solution with a spoon to make the ‘lava’ erupt. We had to draw how far the lava spread and used playdough to represent the igneous rock when the lava ‘cools down’. Lastly, we played a game where we had to guess where we would have to evacuate if we lived near our volcano. If we put our name in the evacuation zone we won. We also watched a show called, ‘The Big Melt’. There was fire and sparks, and we learned how it shut down in 1977.

After half term, we will be asking, “How is the Earth structured?”, “What do plants need to grow?” and making a fruity yogurt recipe in DT.

We used the same knots we had learned when making our Christmas Tree decorations. We worked in groups and had to choose from different materials, such as sticks and leaves. In Science, we learned about what makes a balanced breakfast. Together, we researched different food groups and their calories for a Full English breakfast, or cereal. We found out that Full English was better because it was more balanced and most likely would keep us fuller for longer. In PE, we been learning tennis skills. We used bounce ball passes, and we learned that it is important for the tennis ball to hit the centre of the tennis racket. For our History key piece, we created a conversation between an Ancient Egyptian and a Prehistoric Briton, thinking about what they might say to each other if they ever met.

Next week, we will be finishing our Key Pieces of work for this half-term and have our Magna trip to look forward to on Wednesday.

They built over 100 pyramids and one of the most famous is called Giza. They buried their Pharaohs inside with grave goods they would need for the afterlife. The also developed a 365-day Calendar using maths and the moon to calculate these days. They had 12 months like us, but each month had 30 days, which left 5 days a year that didn’t have any month. In Art this week, we finished our key pieces of still life objects, using composition, shading and mixed media. We also finished our Jigsaw group project. We had to work in a team to budget and design a garden for a group of people: people who have a physical disability, people who are poorly and are in hospital, or city children, who don’t have access to a garden. In PE this week, we had some special visitors come to teach us some tennis skills.

Ancient Egyptians used to remove all the organs except the heart, clean and wrap the body. They did this because they believed people who died would need their bodies in the afterlife in a place called the Field of Reeds. However, you could only go to that place if you went to the Hall of Truth for judgement and weighed your heart on a pair of scales against a feather in front of the Gods Anubis and Osiris. In Art, we used mixed media of charcoal, crayon and chalk pastel to create shading using the hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and gradient techniques. In Science, we were asking, “What is inside our bodies?” We learned all about the skeleton and the organs inside our bodies. We have 206 bones, but when you’re a baby you have around 300. We don’t lose bones, but bones fuse together and get stronger as we grow. We learned the femur is the strongest bone in our body and our bones jobs are to protect important organs, such as: brain, lungs and heart. We were also visited by the NHS Foundation Trust to do a kindness workshop. We had a challenge to drew one of our peers and think about things we like about ourselves and the people in our lives we trust.

Next week, we will be asking, in History, ‘What did the Ancient Egyptians develop?’ and learning more about our skeleton in Science.

We were then about to create and command a spirite. In maths, we have been learning all about fractions. We've asked questions like, "What are equivalent fractions?" "What is a unit and non-unit fraction?" And "Which fraction is greater?" In Art, we were asked "What if form?" We learned new shading skills: hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and gradient shading to add light to dark areas to our art work to enable our drawings to appear more three demensional. In History we have continued finding out about the Egyptians and how they lived. We asked, "Who ruled Ancient Egypt?" We learned that during this time, they had Pharaohs who were like a King or Queen, but they had autocracy meaning they didn't have to answer to anybody and could make up their own rules. Finally, in PE this week, we've started a gymnastics unit. We've be practising skills or balancing and control.

It was tricky to measure and fold the paper correctly, however we did have some successful ones. In Forest school, we finally finished our Christmas tree decorations using different knots, such as: lashing knot, clove hitch and lee knot, which helps us with the clove hitch. We then decorated them with different gems and coloured pompoms. On Monday, we enjoyed watching the Rocksteady concert. We got to watch our fellow year 3 classmate play the electric drums in her band and in computing we made Christmas-themed animations using iMotion on the iPads.

After Christmas, we will be asking: ‘Who were the Egyptians?’ ‘What is still life?’ And ‘What are nutritional needs of humans?’

Our spelling rule after Christmas is“g‘’ sounding words: grammar, fatigue, category, ghost, bigger, investigate, biggest guest, guessed, dialogue, monologue, graceful

In Jigsaw, we were learning how to solve problems. We talked about how words can hurt, but also can be used positively. In PE, we had to work in partners to practise different balances and movements. Then in teams, we practised different throwing skills, such as an overarm throw. We also used javelins. In History, our key piece we made was a timeline to show how the early man changed from the stone age, bronze age and iron age. We also got to enjoy our new reading corner this week. To make reading for pleasure more enjoyable, we’ve added some cushions, blankets and a rug.

For our Flashback 4 questions this week, we tested all over vocabulary knowledge from the Autumn term. For example: mixed media, tertiary colours, continuous line, opaque, translucent, transparent, luminous, artificial and natural light source, monotheism, settlement, agriculture. We also asked questions such as: “When did the first human-like species exist?”, “What is a nomadic lifestyle?” and “What is our region and county?”

Next week we have lots to look forward to: Rocksteady concert, a church visit to sing Christmas corals and Friday’s treat afternoon.

Our spelling rule next week is “f‘’ sounding words: forward, fruit, affect, effect, phase, efficient, giraffe, magnify, magnificent, often, therefore, fearsome.

We used watercolour to create a flat wash then we used poster paint in spray bottles to recreate cave-style handprints. Tomorrow, we will use other media (charcoal and chalk pastels) to draw our extinct mammals. In French, we’ve been learning the names of different animals. For example: un cheval (horse), un oiseau (bird) and une souris (mouse). In Forest school, we’ve continued to learn different notes called a clove hitch. In PE, we’ve been learning different athletic skills, like jumps, running and throwing.

Our “Flashback 4” questions this week were:

1.Name two things historians think Prehistoric Britons believed during the Stone Age.

2.The dove and light are two symbols found in Christian art about the Trinity. What do they represent?

3.Name two ways you can add watercolour to paint a background.

4.Which is bigger, a county or a region?

Next week, in RE we’ll be asking, “What is the Pentecost?” and in Jigsaw, “How can words harm?”

They lived in tents because they were moving a lot. This is called a ‘nomadic lifestyle’. In Forest school, we’ve been learning different types of knots for an art project. In Science, we asked “How does the distance of a light source effect the size of a shadow?” We found out that the further away a light source (torch) the smaller the shadow became.

Our “Flashback 4” questions this week were:

We got to see lots of different ecofacts, from dinosaur legs bones, a fossilised dinosaur egg and a T-Rex footprint. We also made our own fossils and fossil rubbings. In Computing, we were asking, “How can we animate our drawings?” We used an app on the iPads called iMotion to capture different frames of our own drawings. We learned a new term, ‘onion-skin’ which is when you can see the previous frame overlapping your current frame. In Art, we asked, “What are tertiary colours?” We learned how to mix tertiary colours, using primary and secondary colours to create a colour wheel. In Science, we asked, “How are shadows formed?” We used torches and a range of opaque, translucent and transparent object to observe how light passes through each object, allowing a shadow to form, or not. We found out that opaque objects create good shadows because they allow no light to pass through them.

Our “Flashback 4” questions this week were:

1.Who lived first the Neanderthals or Homo sapiens?

2.A light source is something that ‘emits’ it’s own light. What does this mean? Can you give an example?

In Art, we asked, “what is mixed media?” We used charcoal and chalk pastels to create a cave-style drawing using earthy colours. In PE, we’ve been playing different variations of the game tig. In History, we were asking, “What is the difference between an artefact, ecofact and features?” We learned that historians use these to help learn about the past. An artefact was man-made, an ecofact was natural and a feature is something that has been built in the landscape.

The first 3 periods of time in prehistoric Britain were: stone age, bronze age and iron age. During the stone age, we learned about three different eras: Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic. The first two human-like species to exist after dinosaurs, were Neanderthals and Homosapiens. In Art, we have started a project to create a cave painting. We learned a new skill called continuous line drawing, used by Pablo Picasso. In Music, we have been learning the names of notes. For example: a semibreve is a 4 beat note. We also learned the name to describe quick, “spikey” notes, which are called staccato.

Our “Flashback 4” questions this week were:

1.The stone age was split into three eras. What were they?

In reading, we have learned what’s below our feet. We found soil made out of water, dead plants and animals and air. We also found skeletons and other ancient artefacts, which an archaeologist can use to find out about the past. In our reading pledge, we’ve finished ‘The night we got stuck in a story.” The two main characters, Lana and Harrison, had to save the golden diving spiders from being destroyed by developers, who were going to tear down their tree habitat. Lana overthrew the evil spider queen and saved her brother Harrison.

We discovered that hamlets are even smaller than villages, with only a few human features, such as houses, or farms, with lots of green spaces. Whereas a city has more human features, such as transport links, greater number of buildings and more populated. In Computing, we asked, “What is a network?” and began learning about how computers can send messages to each other. In class we modelled this with string and used a network switch, which job it is to direct the messages to the correct places. In Science, we carried out an investigation to see what soil is made from. We looked at different soil samples (clay coil, chalk soil and sandy soil) to see how they were different in appearance and texture.

What are the three states of matter? Who is Katsushika Hokusai and what piece of art is he known for? Who is Sacagawea? Who is Michael Collins?

Our Flashback 4 questions have been: Can you name me a solid, a liquid and a gas? Why are processed foods not very good for you? Can you name me any colours in French? Where did the Great Fire of London start?

Next week we will be asking: What is a solid? What is an expedition and why are they significant to Sacagawea and Michael Collins? How can we find out about Hindu Dharma? How can we recognise a half?

Our spelling rule next week is ‘t’ sounding words, such as: history, important, interest, material, affect, effect, opposite, attract, receipt, notice, straight and strength.

Our PE days are Wednesday's and Thursday's.

Our Graduate Award that we are working towards is Music, focusing on musical instruments.
