Hello. My name is Mr Copley. In class, I enjoy teaching all subjects but I have a particular interest in Maths and History. We work hard and pay a lot of attention to extending our vocabulary. We like to have fun in year 5 but we also know we need to work hard and try our best in everything we do.

Hello! My name is Mr Bates and I have been teaching for nearly ten years. I am passionate about inspiring all learners and I am very interested in the more creative sides of teaching. I began teaching in Brighton before moving back to my home town of Hessle. I have taught KS2 for the majority of my career and I love that age as children are ‘growing’ into who they are and have a basic understanding of humour! When I am not teaching I am lucky enough to be able to look after my two children and continue to follow another passion of mine – wedding photography.

It’s a thrilling adventure filled with imaginative worlds, alternate maps, and courageous characters. We’re thoroughly enjoying the plot’s twists and turns, as well as the meaningful themes it explores.

In Design & Technology, we’ve been learning how pulleys work. Using cardboard, string, and a hot glue gun, we created our own pulley systems to lift a toy car — a fun and hands-on way to explore mechanical systems.

In Science, we’ve been studying the eight planets and discussing what happened to Pluto. We also explored what life might be like in space, especially aboard the International Space Station.

Geography lessons have focused on the pressing issue of climate change. We’ve discussed its causes, consequences, and the steps we can take to help protect our planet for future generations.

One of the highlights of the week was our end-of-year dance performance of Annie. We gave it our all and loved performing it for our parents — a joyful way to celebrate the end of the year.

Next week, we begin our journey into Year 6 with our new teacher, Mr. Hebb. We’re excited and curious to see what the year ahead will bring!

This week, we’ve had a glimpse of what life will be like in Year 6. We completed our first SATs practice test—and, surprisingly, we really enjoyed the experience! It gave us a sense of what to expect next year, and we feel more prepared and excited for the challenges ahead.

In Reading, we continued diving into our Pledge book, Which Way to Anywhere by Cressida Cowell. It’s a thrilling adventure story filled with imaginative worlds, alternative maps, and brave characters. We’re really enjoying the twists and turns of the plot and discussing the themes it explores.

In Design & Technology, we explored how cogs and gears work. After learning the theory, we had the chance to put our knowledge into practice building our own cardboard cog mechanisms.

Science lessons have continued to focus on space and orbits. We've been learning how the planets move in our solar system and how gravitational forces keep everything in motion.

In Geography, we’ve been tackling the important topic of climate change. We discussed the causes, consequences, and what we can do to help protect our planet.

It’s also been a week full of special visitors. Mr. Simpson joined us to teach about the concept of pilgrimage in R.E., helping us understand why people take spiritual journeys and what they mean to different faiths. The PCSOs also visited to talk about safety and community values.

We’re also wrapping up our drama work with Hull Truck Theatre. Our final workshop with Sophie is on Friday, just before our performance next Tuesday. We’ve been rehearsing The Tempest and had our first go at performing it in front of an audience—Year 3 and 4. We were a bit nervous at first, but it turned out to be a lot of fun and a great confidence boost.

Looking ahead, next week is packed with excitement! We’ve got Rocksteady music performances, our trip to Hull Truck Theatre to perform our Shakespeare piece, an inspiring STEM day at the MKM Stadium, and we'll round off the week with our much-anticipated Sports Day.

We’re looking forward to another week filled with curiosity, creativity, and discovery!

In Maths, we’ve been deepening our understanding of negative numbers—learning how to compare, order, and find the difference between them. This has helped us strengthen our number sense and problem-solving strategies.
In English, our Tempest rehearsals have moved outdoors, giving us plenty of space to bring the play to life. We’re excited to say that we now know all our lines and are enjoying the chance to act out this Shakespearean classic with confidence and flair.
In Reading, we've been exploring the powerful novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Our focus has been on understanding the character of August and how the author uses language to build the character. We are also loving our new Reading corner in the classroom.
In Science, we’ve been studying our solar system—investigating how planets orbit the Sun and learning the difference between natural and artificial satellites. This has sparked lots of questions and curiosity about space exploration!
In Geography, we've turned our attention to the issue of global warming. We’ve been learning about its causes, its impact on the planet, and the importance of making sustainable choices to help protect our environment.
· How are religious views expressed through art?
· How do I compare and order negative numbers?
· What are orbits in our solar system, and how do they work?
· What is global warming, and what impact is it having on our planet?
We’re looking forward to another week of curiosity, creativity, and learning!
