Meet our Eco Warriors:
Their vision and aims for our school are:
Our Eco Warriors are currently in the process of achieving their Green Flag Award to become an eco-friendly school, promote sustainability and improving the environment. Pupils are currently in the process of completing their self assessment audit as part of the process of becoming a Green Flag School.
How they help:
Our Eco Warriors have worked hard over the past year and have now developed the Environmental action plan which can be found below. The ECO topics they choose are healthy living, waste and marine. They link into the school curriculum.
We chose Healthy Living and Waste because this year we are collaborating with our Catering Company who provides our school meals. This involves looking at wastage and also how our school meals are planned ie what ingredients go into our food and how our meals are chosen to give a balanced diet. Our Eco Committee has also been asked to liaise with their individual classes and feed back from a meeting with our Catering Manager on what our pupils would like to see on our school menu. Our school has also obtained a local allotment. Our aim is to plant our own fruit and vegetables which can be used in our school menu.
We have also taken part in ‘School-Cycled’ whereby our Eco-Committee delivered an assembly to the school about how plastics are damaging our Marine life and beaches. We are collecting plastic bottle tops which can be recycled into a piece of furniture for our school.
Our third topic, Marine, was chosen as we were asked to participate in a project called ‘Maritime Oral Histories Project’ ran by our local Maritime Museum whereby our Eco Warriors were given the opportunity to ask questions to volunteers from Hull, who shared their maritime stories. This was to ensure that the maritime stories of the people of Hull are captured for future generations. The Eco Warriors were given a basic biography of each of their volunteers to read, they then used these biographies to help structure their questions.
